DSA cuts and our opposition

Posted by Thomas Ron, 04/05/2014

Hello all

I hope all is well and everyone is not too stressed out with exams coming up.

I wanted to take the time to talk about the announced cuts to the Disabled Students' Allowance by Universities Minister David Willetts.  The policy statement can be seen here https://www.gov.uk/government/speeches/higher-education-student-support-changes-to-disabled-students-allowances-dsa

While the policy is just a statement it appears that funding for assistive technology will be sharply cut.  Additionally, non-medical helpers such as note takers, scribes, etc look like they will be cut as well.

Neither myself, nor our Network want to take any action without fully understanding the issue.  Therefore, we will be meeting with Disability Services to fully understand the impact of these cuts.

We will also be writing to Universities Minister David Willetts asking him to explain himself to us the students so we can understand what the government exactly wants to do, as well as have him hear students concerns so he can act on it.

We will also be providing petitions for students to sign to present to our university MPs, Hugh Bayley and Julian Sturdy to ask the government to reconsider the cuts.

Hopefully we can work together to ensure that disabled students are not too badly affected by these cuts
