Term is in full swing and with it comes the mad dash for summer internships. This is often very comeptitive, and often disabled students tend to find themsevles at a disadvantage when looking for work experience. Issues about whether to disclose or not come up, as well as issues on actually accessing work.
With this in mind, a programme was set up last year called Change 100, which sought to send disabled students to 100-day long internships at major companies (charities like Leonard Cheshire Disability, companies like SAB Millar, or even major banks like Barclay's). I myself participated on their pilot scheme and had a very good time.
This year they wish to repeat the success of the pilot and are looking for students in York. Therefore, they are coming up to York on Thursday at 12. They will be in ATB/042. They will be discussing their programme, as well as taking questions from students. I will also be there to discuss my own experiences, given that I had such an internship last summer.
Change 100 is a great opportunity to get some top-class work experience that many would kill for. The companies they work with are leaders in their field and they are very accomodating, making sure that all disabilities are catered for. I have volunteered and worked many summers, but this was the most empowering workplace I have ever been at. Therefore, I highly reccomend other students to come and see for themselves what Change 100 is doing, and to apply for an internship. Please do come along on Thursday, for what looks to be a great session
