University of York Students' Union (YUSU)

York Sport Union

63 different University sport clubs on offer at the York Sport Union, All our clubs are student-led which means they are run for the students, by the students. We have clubs that range from women’s rugby, hockey and lacrosse, to the more obscure Octopush.

Many of our clubs compete in BUCS (British University College Sport). There are three types of competitions that can be entered in BUCS. These are the BUCS Leagues, Individual Competitions or Team Competitions.

Each university is competing for BUCS points which will determine their placing in the BUCS Points Table. In 2014/15 we aimed to finish in the Top 40 and we achieved this by finishing 36th,2 places higher than the 2013/14 season!  If your club competes in the BUCS Leagues you will playin regular matches on Wednesdays and some Sundays, depending on your club. This will involve travelling across the country to compete against other universities. This is an incredible experience and a great way to meet new people!

The individual and team competitions take place over several weekends of the academic year and include sports such as swimming and athletics. Although they are individual events, your club will travel together to the competition. These competitions are a great way to represent your university and earn some BUCS points, as well as meet new people from your club and other universities.

As well as BUCS, many of our clubs compete in local and regional leagues. This means that they got lots of match practice whilst playing against athletes of varying skills and abilities. Don’t forget we also have the College Sport, Give it a go and York Active if you want to play against your rival colleges or try a new sport!

The rivalry between York and Lancaster has a long history full of conflict. Stemming from the War of the Roses that resulted in decades of civil war in the fifteenth century, this fierce rivalry lives on to this day, in the form of the largest inter-university sporting tournament in Europe.

Roses is easily the biggest event in the sporting calendar. This bitterly contested tournament alternates between York and Lancaster, with a full weekend of feisty fixtures taking place across over 50 sports. The history books record a narrow lead for York, with 26 overall Roses victories to Lancaster's 24.

After a huge home win for York in 2015, we are looking forward to travelling away to our rivals once more and this year promises to be bigger than ever. Make sure to keep a close eye on this page for the latest updates and news on our quest for an away Roses victory in 2016!

The equal opportunities scheme aims to educate and discuss the issues that arise particularly within sport that prevents them from engaging. Therefore, the members of your club that participate in the scheme will become Equal Opportunities Officers. A variety of liberation networks have signed up to be a part of the scheme showing their enthusiasm and commitment for Equal Opportunities.
